MedTalks: Undergraduate Workshop Opportunity for Medical/ Clinical Skills

Are you considering a career in medicine? Ever wonder what and why doctors are examining you for during that physician check-up? Want to get a taste of medical school? Want to network with MEDICAL STUDENTS?

If you answered YES, then MedTalks is for you!

The University of Ottawa Medical Education Interest Group is pleased to announce MedTalks – an annual lecture series taught by medical students for undergraduate students! You will get the chance to learn and perform clinical skills on standardized patients and interpret diagnostic tests in small group sessions. Some other skills and topics you can expect are:

  • Visit the anatomy lab - look at and examine cadavers and other clinical specimens

  • Take a clinical history and perform a differential diagnosis

  • Learn about the musculoskeletal system and perform a physical exam

  • Learn about the cardiac system, perform a cardiac exam, read ECGs

  • Learn about the respiratory system, perform a respiratory exam, read chest x-rays

  • Network with medical students

This year, we have three options for interested participants. All sessions will be held at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, Roger Guindon Hall (451 Smyth Road, Ottawa, ON). Spots are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis! Participants will also be awarded a certificate upon completion!

Option 1: MedTalks Series 2015 ($50) [includes dinner] – four 3-hour sessions [60 spots]

Session 1 - Tuesday, January 20th (5pm - 8pm): History Taking and Diagnosis

  • History taking in a clinical setting

  • Medical documentation

  • Differential diagnosis

Session 2 - Thursday, January 22nd (5pm - 8pm): Musculoskeletal System

  • Anatomy of the musculoskeletal system (with visit to the anatomy lab)

  • Physical exam of the musculoskeletal system

Session 3 - Tuesday, March 31st (5pm - 8pm): Cardiovascular System

  • Pathophysiology of the heart and cardiovascular system

  • Physical exam of the cardiovascular system

  • Interpreting ECGs

Session 4 - Thursday, April 2nd (5pm - 8pm): Respiratory System

  • Pathophysiology of the lungs

  • Physical exam of the respiratory system

  • Interpreting chest x-rays

Important note: Please sign up only if you are able to attend ALL 4 sessions. Once you are confirmed to attend the full series, your spot will be reserved at all sessions.

Option 2: MedTalks 1-day Accelerated Session ($20) [includes breakfast and lunch] – one 6-hour session [20 spots]

Saturday, January 17th (9am - 3pm): Clinical Physical Examination

Musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal physical exam skills

Option 3: MedTalks Series 2015 + MedTalks 1-day Accelerated Session ($60)

The deadline to apply will be December 20th at 11:59pm.

The first 60 people to sign-up for the MedTalks Series 2015, and the first 20 students to sign-up for the 1-day Accelerated Session, will receive a confirmation email by the end of December 2014.

Payment will be made by cheque and accepted at the first session.
